Friends,

I just came across a document entitled “The NIST Definition of Cloud Computing” released by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, a division of the Department of Commerce.  Other than being an organization I’ve never heard of before (and I’m willing to bet almost none of us have ever heard of), the document is rather impressive… though you have to scan to the last 2 pages before there’s anything worth while.

Long story short, they break it down into 3 segments; Essential Characteristics, Service Models and Deployment Models.  Only thing I would have changed is NOT used the word “cloud” and used HOSTING instead because in my view, there is no such thing as cloud… but I’ll be expanding upon that in another post next week 🙂
