Rapid advances in information technology have caused us to become increasingly reliant on remote and on-site servers to conduct our day-to-day business functions. The issue is that our increasing reliance can sometimes interpret into an increased amount of vulnerability. There are a number potential dangers to your data whether it be software corruption from a virus or physical damage due to natural disaster. Just recently we observed an experience close to home.

In case you did not already know, servers do actually catch on fire. One did, in fact, just the other day within the server room of the office complex we work out of — I couldn’t resist taking a picture. It seems that the battery exploded in a PowerEdge R610 Rack Server. First there were flames followed by lots of smoke and we said goodbye to a formerly functional device. [see photo above]
